Description

Application
It serves as a classic pH indicator turning colorless (pH 8.2) to pinkmagenta (pH 10) in acid-base titrations formerly as a laxative in pharmaceuticals and in analytical chemistry for endpoint detection.

Purpose
Its primary purpose is visual pH detection via lactone ring-opening in basic conditions forming a resonance-stabilized quinoid anion absorbing 550 nm enabling precise strong acid-strong base titration endpoints.

General Description
Phenolphthalein (C20H14O4) is a white or pale yellow crystalline powder a triphenylmethane pH indicator and weak acid (pKa 9.7) featuring three fused benzene rings connected through a central phthalide lactone with molecular weight 318.33 gmol melting point 258263C density 1.277 gcm and solubility in alcohols but poor in water.
