The main purpose of sodium stearyl fumarate is- to reduce friction and sticking during pharmaceutical tablet and capsule manufacturing while maintaining good drug dissolution properties.

Chemically it is the sodium salt of stearyl fumaric acid. It has good flow and anti-adhesion properties. Compared with magnesium stearate it is more water-soluble and less hydrophobic.
