Application
Leather industry- dehairing hides during processing. Pulp and paper industry- used in kraft pulping. Water treatment- removal of heavy metals by precipitation. Chemical manufacturing- production of sulfur-containing compounds and dyes.
Purpose
Acts as a source of sulfide ions. Enables reduction reactions and precipitation of metals. Provides a strong alkaline and reactive sulfur environment.
General Description
Yellow solid with 9 water molecules (nonahydrate). Strongly alkaline and water-soluble. Releases hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas on contact with acids (rotten egg smell). Hygroscopic and sensitive to air (can oxidize).
