Description
Application
MTBE was widely used as a high-octane gasoline additive to reduce emissions and engine knocking and serves as a low-polarity solvent in organic synthesis extractions HPLC analysis and pharmaceutical processing.
Purpose
Its branched structure provides high blending octane value (RON 118) resistance to autoignition and excellent solvency for non-polar compounds while being stable under neutralacidic conditions but cleaving under strong acids to methanol and isobutene.
General Description
tert-Butyl methyl ether (MTBE) is a volatile flammable organic ether with the molecular formula C5H12O. featuring a central oxygen atom bonded to a methyl group and a tert-butyl group appearing as a clear colorless liquid.
