Description
Application
Cosmetics- Used in hair removal creams and hair perming products (breaks keratin bonds). Chemical industry- Intermediate in synthesis of chemicals and stabilizers. Metal treatment- Used in cleaning and corrosion inhibition. Polymer & plastic industry- As a chain transfer agent. Laboratory use- Reagent in biochemical and analytical processes.
Purpose
Its main purpose is to act as a reducing agent and chemical modifier especially for breaking disulfide bonds in proteins and other compounds.
General Description
Thioglycolic acid is a colorless liquid with a strong sulfur-like odor. It contains both a thiol (-SH) and a carboxylic acid (-COOH) group making it highly reactive and a good reducing agent.
