Description
Application
It is widely used as a pH indicator in acid-base titrations (red below pH 3.1 yellow above pH 4.4) particularly for strong acid-weak base reactions and in textile dyeing.
Purpose
Its primary purpose is to signal titration endpoints through protonation of the azo and dimethylamino groups causing a sharp red-to-yellow color shift due to altered conjugation.
General Description
Methyl orange (C14H14N3NaO3S) is an orange-yellow crystalline powder azo dye featuring a central -NN- linkage between a dimethylaniline moiety and a sulfonic acid-substituted benzene ring with a molecular weight of 327.33 gmol and decomposition above 300C.
