Application
It is primarily applied as a pH indicator (red below pH 2.9 yellow above pH 4.0) in non-aqueous titrations for staining in microscopy and historically in coloring polishes waxes and soaps.

Purpose
Its main purpose is as an acid-base indicator due to its color change in acidic conditions and as a fat-soluble dye for analytical detection though its carcinogenic nature limits modern use.
