Description
Application
It is primarily used as a chlorinating agent to convert carboxylic acids to acid chlorides alcohols to alkyl chlorides and amides to nitriles and in pharmaceutical synthesis for selective functional group transformations.
Purpose
Its main purpose is to enable mild chlorination reactions with SO and HCl as volatile byproducts that are easily removed preserving stereochemistry at carbon centers unlike harsher reagents like PCl.
General Description
Thionyl chloride (SOCl) is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a pungent suffocating odor featuring a trigonal pyramidal structure around the central sulfur(IV) atom bonded to one double-bonded oxygen and two chlorines with a lone pair causing the pyramidal geometry.
