Description

Application
It is used as a disinfectant and antiseptic (e.g. tincture of iodine) in analytical chemistry for starch tests (blue-black complex) thyroid hormone production (as KI) and in pharmaceuticals like povidone-iodine.

Purpose
Its primary purpose is as a mild oxidizing agent and halogenating reagent in organic synthesis antimicrobial applications via iodination of microbial proteins and essential micronutrient for thyroid function.

General Description
Iodine (I2) is a lustrous grayish-black crystalline solid nonmetal element with atomic number 53 forming diatomic molecules featuring a single II bond (266.6 pm) with a density of 4.933 gcm3 melting point of 113.7C and subliming to violet vapor at room temperature.
